Five [5] Simple Steps to Remain Calm in any Worst Experience.

I just had the worst experience so far. I got burgled.

A Monday morning when I went back to my boarding house from a weekend rest, I never expected to be greeted with such horror. As I unlocked the door, the wind swept inside my room and flushed the curtains out that were covering the jalousie windows. I was so shocked to see 3 blades of the jalousie missing. With rapid heartbeat, I looked at my left (where my shoe rack is), my running shoes was gone, my camera was gone, my Sony PSP was gone, and then I looked around, things were all scattered. I saw my wallets, all cashless. Good thing they didn’t take my ID’s and ATM cards. I didn’t know what to do; I didn’t understand what I felt.

But because of that experienced, I learnt 5 simple steps to remain calm despite the situation.

1. Relax.
After everything sank in, I contacted my loved ones, told them what happened, and as what should be normally done, they told me to relax and I did. I drank coffee, then took my guitar (which luckily the burglars didn’t take) and sang and played some songs.

2. Be grateful.
Just what I wrote in my previous post, we be grateful. Why? Because it our choice to see what we want to see, either the negative or the positive side. I focused on the positive side and started thanking the Lord. I thanked that they didn’t take my wallet containing important ID’s and cards, my files, my investment receipts (though unfortunately they took my favorite bag with my healthcare policy in it), my rice cooker, my heater, my guitar, my puzzles, a lot, they left a lot for me. I also gave myself the chance to reflect, what if I was there and those people brought with them some lethal weapon, like an ice pick, I’d be dead. So I was grateful I wasn’t there when the incident happened.

3. Let go.
We went to the police station and reported what happened but I no longer expect anything especially with such unclear leads to where or who the burglars are. Though it was hard on my part, I couldn’t do anything but to let go. In order to receive new blessings, we have to first empty the cup or give room for it. Let go. Because I believe, God has a lot of new blessings for me to receive.

4. Remind yourself you have Loved Ones.
Just few minutes after I discovered what happened, I was better. Why? Because I have people who care. My family, who made me calm and relax. My girlfriend, who was always there and gave me positive energies; I was sad, she made me feel loved. Indeed, they gave me strength, encouragement and support. They are there to make you realize what’s most important in life. You, yourself.

5. Be protected, learn to invest in Liquid Assets.
I don’t know if you are familiar with the term liquid assets (will be writing a post about this one soon), but I was so grateful I was protected. The cash they took was just around 1500 php, which was allocated for my boarding house rent, and my Lord’s budget. My savings were basically safe, my mom’s and my brother’s investment money was luckily deposited before it happened. So, my real assets were indeed protected.

Overall, it was an amazing experience. Quite a conclusion for someone who just got burgled, but it’s because I appreciated the experience, and most importantly the way I was able to handle it.
